JERRY SLATER - KIRKCUDBRIGHT - SCOTLAND
As an inveterate people watcher I am fascinated by how our features change depending on our environment. A sobbing face may be sobbing with laughter. At what point do we know that it is not sorrow? Armed with oil colours, a few brushes, and some hardboard I may see my subject express mirth but then, at a stroke, a smile becomes a grimace. How did that happen? Assuming it was not just down to a deoderant failure, was it by insight or a blunder? Which is the real person? What is real and can a 2D still image ever conjure the 4 dimensions of a living individual? I do hope so.I like making blunders. They are the chaos that tests order to the very limits. Like the place I live in Dumfries & Galloway, SW Scotland, beauty can make your eyes water: 'One step down from heaven, one step up from hell.'
